The Belgian government is to discuss today whether shareholders in troubled insurance and banking group Fortis should be compensated for their loss, according to reports in the Belgian press.

Belgian newspaper De Tijd quoted a government source who said compensation seems unlikely as it would be unacceptable for the state to ask taxpayers to foot the bill."
